Details:

The Koran claims that Jesus did not die on the cross.

Mohammed Bahmanpour of the Islamic College in London defends the Koranic view that although “it was made to appear to them” that he died, in fact he was substituted by another.

Jay Smith is a Christian evangelist to Muslims in London and brings to bear Biblical and other historical witnesses to the crucifixion.  They debate the issue and whether the Koran or the New Testament is to be trusted as a revelation of God.

Includes listener interactions with the guests.

Format:

Mohammed:
- in Surah 4 (Quran), it says that Jesus didn’t die on a cross
- it only appeared to onlookers as though Jesus died on the cross
- muslims believe that the crucifixion really happened
- but Jesus wasn’t the one who died, it was actually Judas
- most Muslims think that Judas betrayed Jesus
- some Shiites believe that Judas died voluntarily in Jesus’ place
- the gospel of Judas seems to make Judas out to be a hero

Jay:
- the 4 gospels agree that Jesus died on a cross
- John is an eyewitness and it’s in his gospel
- Paul’s writings also echo the gospels (Romans and epistles)
- the gospel of Judas is a fourth century document
- it reflects gnostic theology, which denies that Jesus had a body
- even Surah 19 says that Jesus actually did die and rise after
- so Surah 4 and Surah 19 are internally contradictory

Burn A Koran Day Never Happened

First thought: Thank Goodness!

Terry Jones and Wayne Sapp on the Today Show (9/11):

Despite the final cancellation about 300 people came out to protest:

(Source: The Gainesville Sun)

A few things about the protest:

1) I believe that they missed the point. Jones rightly takes issue with Islam, but chose to express that in a very unproductive way. He did not plan to burn Korans as an act of hatred toward people, he planned to burn them as an act of protest toward something that itself is legitimately evil: Sharia Law (Islamic Law). Calling him a bigot, a racist, a hater is easier than sifting through the specifics and probably reveals more about the protesters.

2) When you call someone an intolerant, hate-filled bigot and then protest an event which was cancelled and call for them to get out of your city, well, isn’t it within the realm of possibility that you may be a bit hate-filled yourself? Wouldn’t a truly tolerant bunch recognize that the Dove World Outreach has just as much right to exist as any other religious group?

3) Hatred, racism, and bigotry are really really easy to defeat in an argument. You hear the same cry from pro-gay protesters in CA. They take the other person’s stated position, twist it into something else, call it hatred, and beat up a straw man. Jones’ deal was bad enough with burning the Koran (had he actually gone through with it), was it necessary to heap all of these other offenses on him as well?

The Dove World Outreach website is down (for reasons I don’t care to speculate on at this time… or ever):

Koran Burning will happen… Will Not Happen… Will DEFINITELY happen

Dove World Outreach Center, Gainesville, FL

As 9/11 approaches in Gainesville, FL. Pastor Terry Jones seems to be flip-flopping on whether his Koran burning event will take place. Yesterday he made comments to the effect that the Imam in charge of planning the Ground Zero mosque was considering an alternate location; an event he took as a sign from God that he could cancel the event.

Pardon my ignorance, but I don’t personally recall Pastor Jones mentioning much (if anything) about the Mosque at Ground Zero being a factor in this event. Did that change in the last month since I blogged about this last?
But it seems that Pastor Jones jumped the gun and is now planing to continue with plan A:

During a news conference Thursday, Dove’s Rev. Terry Jones said he was cancelling the burning to fly to New York and meet with an imam to discuss the planned Islamic center and mosque to be built near ground zero.

Jones said he was offered a deal, cancel the burning in exchange for moving the center farther from ground zero.

But Imam Muhammad Musri, of the Islamic Society of Central Florida who helped broker the deal with Jones, said he had offered only a deal to cancel the burning in exchange for a meeting with the leaders behind the New York City mosque.

As for Saturday’s plans, Luke Jones, the son of Terry Jones, said today his father still plans to be in New York, although no official agreement has been signed. (source: firstcoastnews.com)
